MAKING OF
Creating this portfolio of Nancy has been one of my most heartfelt creations. I think my time interviewing her has given me a glimpse into her romanticisation of art and what she holds close. However, when focusing on art, there are often some setbacks.
As this folio is based around the concepts of tattoos, there is the added aspect of having to work around the artist themselves.
While documenting Nancy’s experience, I struggled to find shots that weren’t covered by the artist. I wanted to get some action footage of the tattoo gun against the skin, however since the artist needs to be close and concentrated, I found most angles of the tattoo itself to be covered by the artist.

While there were certain setbacks within this portfolio, I felt extremely confident with the overall process.
In the past, I have created solo documentaries for college, therefore I was able to learn from my mistakes of my previous attempts to further perfect this piece.

I found Nancy to be a little camera shy. While I was feeding her open-ended questions, many of her responses were limited to a singular sentence. This likely was because Nancy had to leave soon after the interview, thus she wanted to get it over with. In the future, if I was to interview someone again, I would likely designate an hour or more to prevent responses from being misguided.
Bringing the footage into Premiere Pro, I already had a vision for the piece that I wanted to create for Nancy’s expression. My previous experience with Premiere Pro meant that I didn’t have to focus as much on basic editing skills and could focus on more unique and technical aspects of the production process, such as colour.
I have only done basic colour correction within video editing before, however I wanted to attempt it, so I delved into the colour presets are available on Premiere Pro. I discovered the preset “Fujifilm Eterna 250d” which I have used throughout my piece. This emulated the look of Fujifilm’s film reels of the same name. They emphasise warm tones and blur slight detail together.
As Nancy’s tattoos reflect her attraction to renaissance and baroque art, I wanted to bring the ‘vintage aesthetic’ to the documentary itself.
I have never used colour alterations on Premiere Pro, so I have kept the colouring rather simple, as to not over-complicate such a meaningful topic.
I believe this process to be rather successful. While extremely basic, I believe it has further enhanced the emotion behind this documentary.

I wanted my moving image and composite image to marry together to further emphasise my topic. Initially I struggled to find a concept to work upon, therefore I pulled a frame of my moving image to start from.
In my previous portfolio, my weakest link was my composite image. I have never used Photoshop for demanding tasks before this year, thus a challenge for me was the fact that I had to take a considerate amount of time to discover the basics of the programme. My feedback from my previous attempt was to “keep it simple”, to make my message clearer.

This inspired me to base it upon an artwork that Nancy was presently studying; “The Creation of Adam” by Michelangelo. Pulling this piece into Nancy’s tattoo, I believe I have created a simpler message that is even more meaningful.
I believe that by combining Nancy’s tattoo with the art that inspires it highlights the meaning behind her passions, and why she expresses herself this way.

It’s because of the time and dedication that Nancy gave me throughout this portfolio that I have taken such time and detail for her expression. Whilst there were certain learning curves throughout the process, I believe that my finished products represent my skills and Nancy’s passion.
